Edison Testing Laboratories (ETL Intertek)
Edison Testing Laboratories (ETL) is a division of Intertek, a global group of laboratories that test everything from petroleum to toys. This organization's mark, like many others on our list, is placed on products that adhere to widely accepted gas, electrical, and other safety standards. These safety standards are developed through independent testing and routine follow-ups by an NRTL (nationally recognized testing laboratory), which means that ETL is held to the same standards as competing certification marks such as UL or CSA. The ETL Listed marking is recognized by local inspectors and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) throughout North America. ETL Listed US & Canada: If the ETL Listed mark has a "US" to the bottom right, it has passed US product safety standards. If it has a "C" to the bottom left, it has passed Canadian product safety standards. If the ETL mark displays both identifiers, it meets both standards. ETL Sanitation Listed: The ETL Sanitation mark is awarded to food service equipment that has been rigorously tested against national sanitation requirements. This mark ensures you that the equipment is fit for use during food production as the manufacturer has not only passed the initial testing but remains in compliance by completing periodic follow-up inspections.
European Union (CE)
CE is a mandatory certification for certain products within the European Economic Area, which covers the states which are members of the European Union. To sell and/or service a piece of restaurant equipment within these countries, it must bear the CE Logo. A product showing the CE marking complies with all applicable health and safety standards defined in European Union laws, known as "directives".
CB Certification
An international safety testing and mutual-recognition system for electrical/electronic products, run by the IECEE. It issues CB Test Reports and CB Certificates based on IEC standards. CB reports let manufacturers use one set of test results to speed up and reduce the cost of getting national safety approvals in many countries. It’s a technical document, not a consumer-facing mark like CE. It applies mainly electrical and electronic products, e.g. household appliances (fridges, ovens), commercial equipment, lighting, IT equipment, power supplies, batteries, and measurement/control devices.
CCC Certification (China Compulsory Certification)
In the field of product certifications, the abbreviation CCC stands for China Compulsory Certificate. Certain product groups must have a CCC certificate before they can be exported to China. It is a mandatory certification in China. The CCC certification is comparable to other certifications for the standardization of product quality and safety, such as the European CE system. CCC (also often called 3C certificate) applies to both imported and Chinese made products. Products requiring CCC certification must obtain CCC approval prior to being to being imported, bought, sold, and used or traded in in China. Improper use of CCC licenses or printing a CCC-mark on products without certification will also result in fines and penalties.
RoHS Compliant
Originating in the European Union, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive restricts hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to protect the environment and public health concerning electronic and electrical waste management. These ten restricted substances, known as EEE, include heavy metals, flame retardants, and plasticizers, which are hazardous to the environment and pollute landfills. While there are no federal restrictions in the US, California has its own RoHS laws. Any covered electronic devices sold in California must meet the EU RoHS regulations.
ISO
ISO 9001: Quality Management System — defines requirements for a QMS to ensure consistent product/service quality, continual improvement, and customer satisfaction. Useful for process control, documentation, and performance monitoring. ISO 45001: Occupational Health & Safety Management System — sets requirements to manage workplace health and safety risks, reduce incidents, and provide a safer working environment for employees and visitors. ISO 14001: Environmental Management System — specifies a framework to manage environmental responsibilities, reduce pollution and resource use, and ensure continual environmental performance improvement and regulatory compliance.
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) certification refers to compliance with federal energy conservation standards and test procedures administered by the DOE. Manufacturers must test products to DOE protocols, certify results in the DOE compliance database, and meet minimum energy-efficiency limits. It is mandatory for covered products sold in the U.S.; ensures verified energy performance, avoids penalties, and enables legal market access. It applies mainly energy-using appliances and equipment, for example: Residential and commercial refrigeration (refrigerators, freezers) Air conditioners, heat pumps, and HVAC systems Water heaters and boilers Dishwashers, clothes washers, dryers Lighting and ballasts (where covered) Commercial refrigeration and other covered commercial HVAC/refrigeration equipment
